BHAF Story

Dr. Chika Okem Akwiwu, at the age of 36, faced breast cancer, turning her adversity into a catalyst for change. Mentored by Dr. Jacqueline Walters, an esteemed OBGYN and two-time breast cancer conqueror, Dr. Chika underwent a double mastectomy after early detection served as the catalyst for Dr. Chika's transformation into an ambassador and the visionary behind the Breast Health Angels Foundation. Since its inception in 2016 the organization aims to empower women facing breast health challenges through awareness, education, and advocacy, ensuring that no one battles alone.

Mission

The Breast Health Angels Foundation, driven by the resilience of survivors and a fervent commitment to effecting enduring change, is dedicated to reducing breast cancer prevalence and eliminating late-stage detection through comprehensive screening initiatives. With extend cancer support programs to underprivileged communities, debunk myths through culturally sensitive outreach, and offer psychological support to cancer patients.

MILESTONES

The foundation has achieved significant milestones, including organizing 5K walks across Atlanta, London, Lagos, and Port Harcourt. This impactful initiative swiftly gained momentum, expanding to encompass 10 and then 20 cities, underscoring the far-reaching influence of our mission.
The Collaboration with Project PINK BLUE Abuja, a multifaceted cancer organization, was showcased during the 2024 World Cancer Day walk in Abuja, Nigeria, with over 2,000 participants. This collaboration exemplified the foundation’s dedication to global cooperation in combating cancer. Additionally, the foundation hosted the World Cancer Day Symposium 2024, fostering discussions among Nigerian stakeholders to tackle the rising costs of cancer medication post-pharmaceutical company departures.

Through strategic collaborations with esteemed organizations, Project PINK BLUE Abuja, Engraved Life Foundation Port Harcourt, and Atinuike Foundation in Lagos, Breast Health Angel Foundation spearheaded screening programs across Nigeria for over 2 to 3 thousand women also providing essential support. We've conducted series of tailored survivor meetings, mentorship programs, and financial assistance, guided by the principles of Empowerment, Education, Encouragement, and Elevation (the 4Es). Our initiatives contribute to early detection and support, leaving a lasting impact on breast cancer awareness and survivorship.
